Psalm 124:1-8 (KJV)
1 If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, now may Israel say;
2 If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, when men rose up against us:
3 Then they had swallowed us up quick, when their wrath was kindled against us:
4 Then the waters had overwhelmed us, the stream had gone over our soul:
5 Then the proud waters had gone over our soul.
6 Blessed be the LORD, who hath not given us as a prey to their teeth.
7 Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers: the snare is broken, and we are escaped.
8 Our help is in the name of the LORD, who made heaven and earth.
Tell Your Story for His Glory
This Psalm is power packed as David… 1) Considers, 2) Declares and 3) Exalts upon his reflection of what it would have been, could have been, should have been and enemies who wished it had been! This Psalm speaks to us as we consider and see a soaring change in life and society that shape decay, failure, negative screams of injustice, hopelessness, mess and death of young as much or more than the old. Truth be told… most folk are on the brink of life’s challenges, trials, test, tribulation, destitution, tight rope or just trouble knocking on their door. Maybe friends you used to have are not there anymore, but have moved to the other side as your enemy! David makes it an “us” situation. You are not the ONLY ONE going through!
David can tell us somethings because he knew a lot of things…experienced a lot of things! He calls Israel’s attention to how they made it in dangerous and unheard of circumstances. Does that sound like you?
- Consider…
- if it had not been for the Lord on (my) (paraphrased for writer’s point) side I would have been consumed. BUT GOD, came between you and danger.
- if it had not been for the Lord who was on (my) side, the waters, floods, currents of life would have swept me away.
- if it had not been for the Lord who was on (my) side, when enemies rose up against me..
- if it had not been for the Lord on (my) (paraphrased for writer’s point) side I would have been consumed. BUT GOD, came between you and danger.
Point: Because “when the enemy rushes in like a flood, The Spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard against him.”- Isaiah 59:19. The attack, the sudden threat was supposed to destroy you, sweep over you, pull all stops from under you with an unexpected BLOW! The Lord has set a STANDARD…a plan of defense, a barrier. The enemy can NOT TOUCH you! The Spirit of the Lord operates in the Name of the Lord as David reflects in verse 8!
2. Declare…
- when men rose up against us (Me), they were full of wrath. there intent was to make QUICK destruction.
- they are likened to the fowler (hunter) of the prey (bird) caught in a trap.
Point: The trap was set, BUT we ESCAPED! How did you get away and escape the enemy? Because the Lord has BROKEN the devil’s snare! I heard the song writer say, “There is POWER, POWER, Wonder Working POWER in the BLOOD!” It’s in the Precious BLOOD of the LAMB!
3. Exalt…
- blessed be the Lord (v6)
- our help is in the Name of the Lord (v8).
- Point: After, considering what it could have been, would have been, should have been and enemies who wished it had been… David elevates his praise and bless the Lord who brought him through it all!
Conclusion…
I don’t know if this Song of Degree was a reflection of the time when he was young and slew the lion and the bear and took the father’s sheep out of the mouth of the would be slayer; or if it was the remembrance he faced the giant Goliath and Saul’s army were intimidated at the size and uncircumcised language of the giant; or the many times King Saul had determined to nail him to the wall with his javelin or search him out to take him OUT! I realize I didn’t deserve it!
I’m a witness for his glory…
The witness shares what he sees, hears and experienced as fact. The words and actions of the witness become alive to others. The witness reflects God’s grace and has impact on the mind, soul and relationship of others. The witness allows the Holy Spirit to have his role in the witnessing! The character of the witness gives HOPE to those who are caught in the snares of life and the devil planned to steal, kill and destroy them. I’m a witness that the Lord is good and His mercy endureth forever.
